Anti-Abortion Groups Shut Down Habitat for Humanity Project

Posted by Jill Filipovic, Feministe at 1:00 PM on June 6, 2008.

Once again, abortion opponents reveal their disregard for life after birth.

I know we’ve said it over and over: “Pro-lifers” don’t seem to care much for “life” once people actually enter the world. They oppose contraception access, which could prevent millions of abortions; their political allies take no steps to assist low-income women; they oppose universal health-care; and they generally stand against any social program that would actually help women and children. In fact, 100% of the worst legislators for children are “pro-life.”

So it shouldn’t come as a surprise when anti-choicers oppose programs that help born people secure shelter. And yet, even I was stunned at this:

Quote
An anti-abortion group has broken up a deal between Planned Parenthood and Habitat for Humanity by blasting out 10,000 e-mails to Habitat supporters.

Planned Parenthood is building a 23,000-square-foot regional headquarters on Central Avenue, and planned to sell Habitat the land next door for a token $10 to build three below-market-cost houses. The deal benefited Planned Parenthood because the city required the clinic to put up buildings as a buffer between its parking lot and Cohen Way.

“We could have put up any building we wanted,” said Barbara Zdravecky, president of Planned Parenthood. “We wanted to donate the land so Habitat could build more attainable housing.”

So Planned Parenthood sold a large piece of land to Habitat for Humanity for $10 — PP needed buildings to go up in the space, and they figured that they would use the requirement for good. But “pro-life” groups were so outraged that they shut down the project — a project that had nothing to do with abortion, and only meant that there would be more attainable multi-family housing in Sarasota. According to the American Life League, the problem is any “association” with Planned Parenthood. Even when Planned Parenthood is essentially giving them a gift. Even when the “association” has nothing to do with any of Planned Parenthood’s activities, and simply amounts to more housing for low-income families.

Take action to counter anti-choicers’ stranglehold on the “life” issue: Go here to tell national Habitat for Humanity that they shouldn’t let themselves be bullied by anti-choice, anti-life asshats. And go here to donate to Habitat — and let them know that pro-choicers are their base.

BabbleonSister won't be truly happy until she can slice and dice a baby herself.

I love how they try to disguise murder with the word "choice" I have said it before and I'll say it agin; "Abortion is a blood stain that will never be washed from the hands of this nation, we will pay dearly for our decision to allow the "right to choose" to circumvent the rights of of a living human being"

I find it completely ironic that a wholesale murder group would try to polish their image by essentially donating land to a mostly Christian group that builds homes for families.   Roll Eyes

Habitat for Humanity Ends Land Deal With Planned Parenthood

(CNSNews.com) - The Sarasota, Fla., chapter of a Christian ministry dedicated to housing the poor was praised by pro-life activists on Wednesday for terminating its connection with the local chapter of the nation's largest provider of abortions.

After the board of directors of Habitat for Humanity of Sarasota, Inc., voted to disengage itself from Planned Parenthood of Southwest and Central Florida and not go through with a planned land deal, Jim Sedlak, vice president for American Life League (ALL), said in a news release that his organization was "extremely pleased" with the board's decision.

"In early May, Sarasota Habitat had agreed to buy a piece of land from Planned Parenthood for $10 and agreed to build multi-family housing" on the property in the Rosemary District north of downtown Sarasota, Sedlak said.

"This agreement allowed Planned Parenthood to fulfill a zoning requirement it needed to get an occupancy permit for a new abortion facility it is building" on the site, he added.

*snip*

Sedlak said he considered it shameful for an organization like Habitat to partner with a group that so obviously contradicted its goals of providing a "simple, decent, affordable place to live in dignity and safety" for everyone.

"I don't see how building a residence next to an organization that kills babies, pushes pornography, and covers up for rapists gives a family dignity or safety," he said.

Habitat for Humanity partners with Planned Parenthood

>>>snip

By agreeing to purchase Planned Parenthood's land for $10 and build housing on a portion of it, Habitat for Humanity enabled Planned Parenthood to bypass a city requirement that had been preventing the organization from obtaining an occupancy permit.

Planned Parenthood's dilemma stemmed from city ordinances that required a multifamily "liner" building be constructed at the back of the property before Planned Parenthood could open a clinic at the front. The organization had been unable to secure a builder to meet the requirement…until they found Habitat for Humanity.

4. No sense of long-term ramifications.

You're anti-abortion. You make it difficult for certain women to have the right to choose whether to terminate a pregnancy. These women decide to carry a zygote to embryo to fetus to child, by choice or by lack of choice. The mothers and children have little means to pay for a place to live. Habitat for Humanity would have provided sorely needed homes. And these anti-abortion people made sure that there would be more homeless families searching for a place to live.

Love the zygote, hate the child.

Okay, what do you sick fucks not get? The woman had a CHOICE of whether or not to open her legs, and if she did she could have CHOSEN to use some sort of birth control! Nobody made her go out and get herself knocked up! So because the woman CHOSE poorly, now that innocent life has to pay?

Perhaps the Habitat homes would have provided housing for some homeless families, but Habitat CHOSE to not take the land from an organization that is so flagrantly against everything they stand for. They made a CHOICE to respect all life. Sorry you all can't appreciate life at any stage.

Sarasota Advisers Review Habitat Plan
Posted on: Thursday, 4 October 2007, 09:00 CDT

By Stacey Eidson, The Bradenton Herald, Fla.

Oct. 4--SARASOTA -- The largest Habitat for Humanity community in the United States will soon provide affordable housing to residents only three miles from downtown Sarasota and less than a mile from University Parkway.

Plans for the 235-unit townhouse project, which has been described as a "premier community" for mixed-income families by Mike Jacobson, executive director of Habitat for Humanity Sarasota Inc., went before Sarasota's Development Review Committee on Wednesday.

Somehow, I don't think PPP's $10 of land will make a huge dent.   Roll Eyes

I might not be too popular here but this is my take.

Use birth control. It is smart to plan when a pregnancy happens.

Do something stupid or something drunk and use the day after pill is smart pregnancy planning.

Find out you are pregnant and decide that this is a bad time for a baby you have a choice to terminate within the first three months.

I can compromise but the abortionist zealots cannot.

I disagree.  Chemical or Hormonal birth controlis subject to failure if the woman takes any of numerous other prescription drugs, it is a case where no protection may be better than false protection.  The day after pill has it's own problems.

If you find out you are pregnant, then that human life has the right to be protected from assault and murder by other humans.  Tht includes it's mother.

Poverty and the threat of homelessness leads out to abortion. In fact, many of those who have an abortion are poor, but don't let that stop people from hurting Habitat, which may prevent abortions by building homes.

I agree, even with the part of stopping after three months (unless there is life endangerment).

I would also think we should do more to prevent what makes women want to have abortions. Help poor women and so forth.

I though this was supposed to be conservative cafe?

Then what are you doing here? Why aren't you out building a house or something?

Cause they don't build houses at night?

They don't perform abortions at night, either? Point?

In other words, why don't you go post pro-abortion comments at the DU or NU? You could post at night there!
