Mass casualities and multiple injuries were reported Sunday after a massive explosion at a Connecticut power plant, police confirmed to Fox News. The explosion occurred just before 11:30 a.m. local time at the Kleen Energy plany on River Road in Middletown, Conn., according to authorities. Medical rescue personnel told the newspaper there were at least two fatalities, and at least 100 people injured — including four in critical condition. Things I've seen elsewhere suggest that these figures are very preliminary, with unpleasant updates likely. |

Kleen Energy is a customer of ours; I was talking to their rep earlier today and he's pretty worried about some of the people he talks to.

I caught up with some youtube footage. It is hard to believe that only two people have died, but let's hope that there are no more deaths. Sympathies to familes and friends of the workers.

Gang, this had to have been a big plant, with serious capacity. I've been inside a 7 mW "peaker" plant which comes on only when demand is highest (and the power company can get the most for the electricity generated, maybe an hour a month average). It's the size of a 45-foot long trailer pulled by a Volvo or a Mack (trucks). It's a gas turbine--essentially, a jet engine. Completely automated--it can be turned on by a computer command 50 miles away.
This thing was big.
