I can remember the old chest type pop machine, they had an opener built into the side. The one at our local gas station/store didn't take money, you just paid at the counter. That place closed on the late 70's , it was a mom and pop place that closed when "pop" passed away. I think that place had to be one of the earlier "convenience" stores.

About 20 years ago when my husband was into beer-making, we made a few batches of homemade root beer -- what great stuff although very volatile!  A slight shaking would make 1 or 2 bottles blow their lids.  And with all the yeast and sugar, I'm not sure what the actual alcohol content was but it wasn't zero!!

Yeah.

Another thing is the word "bucket" as compared with the word "pail".

What do they call those things down over there in North Carolina?

Bucket

I'd have to ask one of my older sisters as to how long the place had been there. I can only remember it from when I was 6 or 7 in the late 60's. It was a full service station, with a grocery store, but limited selection of brands.

I always thought if it was small with a plastic handle it was a pail and larger with a metal handle a bucket.

We had the A&W root beer stands "down the Shore" -- they'd make you the best root beer float on earth! I remember as a kid walking to whatever was the closest one with my dad when we'd rent a house on Long Beach Island. Good times!!

I hear ya!  Remember the trays that fitted onto a couple of inches of window and basically defied gravity?  And those real glass mugs had been kept in the freezer so when you grabbed the handle of your float glass, you almost lost a couple of layers of skin prying your fingers off. Man, do I want one of those now!!

Does anyone remeber taking a 6.5 oz Coke bottle and putting a bag of peanuts in it? Please tell me that wasn't just some weird thing we did.

I did a couple of times, but it made the coke nasty.
