Throughout my childhood, everyone I knew had gas stoves.
Their body parts, properly assembled, were all accounted for.
I've worked with dozens of different stoves in dozens of different locations over many years, and I don't think I've ever heard of one explode before. I did take my eyebrows off lighting one of those Waffle House-sized flattop griddles once, but that's it. I can't remember if any brands were better than others because nearly everywhere had an on-call maintenance company come out to fix anything the minute it broke.
I've only ever had electric at home. It's convenient and dependable, but not nearly as much fun.
