A young mother who was judged too stupid to care for her own baby has accused social workers of 'stealing' the child from her.
The woman, who must be identified only as Rachel for legal reasons, is taking her case to the European Court of Human Rights in a last ditch attempt to halt the adoption of the child, now aged three.
....The adoption is going ahead despite a recent psychiatrist's report which declared that the 24-year-old has 'good literacy and numeracy and that her general intellectual abilities appear to be within the normal range'.
It said the unemployed former cleaner had no previous history of learning disability or mental illness.
....A study last year found that Rachel's IQ was rated at 71 - the IQ of an 'average' adult is 90-109.
....The child's father, aged 66, has no contact with his daughter and he and Rachel are no longer together. Daily Mail (UK)

IQ of 71? She'd be a freekin genius at DemocratUnderground.com - and some of them have children (who accidentally escaped the womb alive).

Good thing those potsmokers can't count the number of days between their periods.

While I joke about this sometimes, something about this just reeks of wrong. Has the woman actually done anything to garner this, other then get a low score on an IQ test?

The social services agency didn't believe that one to two hours a day, visiting her child which was in the ICU was enough. I'm personally awash in the same concerns as you, it's a dangerous precedent and disturbing possibility.

Different IQ tests scale their scores in different ways, but with a SD of 10 (as seems to be the case from the article) this woman is nearly as far from normal as a certified genius is - in the other direction, of course. Don't know that that makes her too stupid to raise a child, but she certainly is exceptionally dumb.

unmarried, unemployed, was not married to the father, no skills, who as 40 years older than her and is not involved at all, seemed uncaring for the kid at the time it was in the hospital.....
All these are results of the IQ of 71.
I think I would side with the judge on this.
